“The Italian police put my life in danger with a search at gunpoint”

Tiemoue Bakayoko said Milan police put his life “in danger” when they searched him with a gun.

The AC Milan midfielder, on loan from Chelsea, has been arrested by police as they search for a suspect involved in a shooting.

Footage of the incident, which happened two weeks ago, went viral this week as Milan police justified their tactics by highlighting the seriousness of the situation.

And on Thursday, Bakayoko, 27, recounted her experience in a video posted on social media.

“To make a mistake is human,” Bakayoko said. “I have no problem admitting it. However, the methods they used are problematic.

“You have to let it be known that in the video you don’t see everything, maybe just the quietest part.

“I found myself with a gun a meter away from me, and [so did] the passenger. They really put our lives in danger.

“The consequences could have been more serious if I had not remained calm and had not been recognized in time.”

Earlier in the week, police in Milan released a statement to Reuters explaining the armed search.

“It should be noted that the search took place in an operational context which justified the adoption of the highest security measures,” the statement said.

“Also depending on self-protection, and [it] took place in a manner absolutely consistent with the type of alarm in progress.

“Once the person has been identified and [it had been] established that he was not involved, the service resumed without any kind of remark from the person concerned.”

Bakayoko is halfway through a two-year loan spell at Milan, whom he helped win a first Serie A title in 11 years last season.

This is his second loan spell at San Siro after spending the 2018-19 campaign there on loan. He made 18 appearances for Milan in all competitions during their title-winning season.
