‘The Bad Guy’ and ‘Prisma’ – Deadline
Amazon Prime Video today unveiled its Italian office’s upcoming projects, including a pair of new original series that have been given the green light: The mean one and Prisma.
An event held in Rome, which the press attended remotely, saw virtual appearances from top Amazon executives, including Amazon Studio chief Jennifer Salke and European Originals director Georgia Brown. Moderator of the proceedings, Nicole Morganti, responsible for the Italian originals of Amazon, unveiled several new projects:
Dark crime comedy The mean one revolves around the story of Nino Scotellaro, a Sicilian prosecutor who has dedicated his entire life to fighting the Mafia and who is suddenly accused of being one of the men he has always fought against. After being condemned, and having nothing more to lose, Nino decides to set up a Machiavellian plan of revenge.
MGM plugs into Amazon streaming machine as it shifts into high gear
Giancarlo Fontana and Giuseppe G. Stasi will direct, the project was created by Ludovica Rampoldi, Davide Serino and Stasi and Fontana, and produced by Nicola Giuliano, Francesca Cima and Carlotta Calori for local Oscar-winning producer Indigo Film. Amazon announced its global launch in 2022.
Drama series for young adults Prisma is created by Ludovico Bessegato and Alice Urciuolo, whose Skam Italia, a remake of the Danish series Skam, was a success in Italy. It tells the story of Marco and Andrea, two identical twin brothers who both challenge gender norms in different ways. Their journey of self-discovery will also involve their group of friends, all trying to find their own place in an ever-changing world. Bessegato will direct, Rosario Rinaldo, CEO and President of Cross Productions, will produce. Amazon said the show will debut in 2022.
Other announcements at today’s event included castings for previously revealed projects.
Kim Rossi Stuart has been confirmed as the protagonist of the heist series Everyone loves diamonds, based on the 2003 Antwerp Diamond Heist, the world’s largest diamond theft. Show is directed by Gianluca Maria Tavarelli, produced by Mario Gianani and Lorenzo Gangarossa for Wildside, a Fremantle company, and written by Michele Astori, Stefano Bises, Giulio Carrieri and Bernardo Pellegrini. The series will debut in 2023.
On the cinema side, Aurora Giovinazzo has confirmed as Stella, the protagonist of Amazon’s first Italian original film, the comedy for young adults. Anni da cane, along with other cast members including Isabella Mottinelli, Federico Cesari and Luca Vannuccini. The film follows a clumsy, cynical and imaginative sixteen-year-old teenager, who after a life-changing car accident involving a dog convinces herself that she must count her age in dog years. Fabio Mollo is directed from a screenplay by Mary Stella Brugiati and Alessandro Bosi. Notorious Pictures produces. The film will debut in 2021.
Elsewhere, Amazon has unveiled a talent contract with Italian musician and rapper Achille Lauro, one of the entrants in the upcoming Amazon Original series. Celebrity Hunted season two. He will act in Anni da cane and write a song for the Prisma series, as well as appearing in a guest role.
In terms of acquisitions, Viktoria Wasilewski, content manager for Prime Video, Italy, revealed that the streamer has taken over Monterossi, a six-episode detective series with a comedic twist based on the bestselling crime novels by Alessandro Robecchi, and Ben: Breathed, a documentary about one of the most talented young Italian artists.
