Inter captain Samir Handanovic has brushed off the threat that his place will be taken by Andre Onana with a display against Turin, Italian media suggest

Inter captain Samir Handanovic helped prevent Andre Onana from encroaching on his starting spot in the Nerazzurri goal with his performance against Turin.

This according to the Italian media Gazzetta.itwhich suggest the 37-year-old has cemented his starting spot despite competition from Onana given the quality of his display against the Granata.

Handanovic will feel the pressure of his number one position at Inter in a way he has never really felt since joining Udinese in the summer of 2012.

Onana has not only been signed as a backup keeper, but as the captain’s long-term successor in goal, and it seems to be a matter of when rather than if the Cameroonian becomes first-choice.

The 26-year-old’s impressive debut under the most difficult of circumstances against Bayern Munich in the Champions League will only have increased the pressure on Handanovic, but the Slovenian has regained his place for the game against Torino.

Handanovic was arguably Inter’s standout performer, and certainly did his part to secure the 1-0 victory by making several excellent saves, and the feeling is that the 37-year-old has once again proven that ‘He was up to the task of being the first-choice for a bit longer.
