Extinction Rebellion Salisbury protesting Rockhopper Exploration
Activists will take to the streets of Salisbury on Friday August 27 to protest a Salisbury-based oil and gas company suing the Italian government.
Extinction Rebellion (XR) Salisbury is unhappy with the actions of Rockhopper Exploration, a city-based oil and gas exploration company.
LIVE UPDATES: Protesters rally in town
Rockhopper Exploration purchased a license to drill for oil off the Italian Adriatic coast in 2014.
The Guardian reported in July that tens of thousands of people opposed the project, persuading Italy’s parliament to ban oil and gas projects within 12 nautical miles of Italy’s coast.
Rockhopper Exploration is now suing the Italian government, which could be forced to pay millions of pounds in damages.
XR Salisbury will meet in the Market Square at noon on Friday August 27, where there will be a number of speakers, a samba band, outreach activities, banners, flags, flyers and information.
The demonstrators will then go up Castle Street to deliver a letter to Rockhopper, asking them to stop his “harmful action against the Italian government”.
A poster promoting the protest calls Rockhopper Exploration “the shameful secret of Salisbury”.
Rockhopper Exploration declined to comment.
