Bishop’s Stortford entrepreneur hits the road for charity

Bishop’s Stortford Business Improvement District (BID) President Karen Burton took a break from cake decorating and embarked on a classic car rally.

She and her husband Terry drive a Classic Mini through Yorkshire during a three-day fundraising event for Buttle UK, a charity founded in 1953 that provides grants to some of the most disadvantaged children and young people in the country.

Karen, who runs Karen’s Cakes in Northgate End, said: “This annual event, which we attended in 2019, is normally held in Italy and is a tribute to the classic Michael Caine film. Italian work. But this year’s event has a change of scenery, instead of the crazy streets of Rome and Turin, it will take place around the spectacular moors and valleys of Yorkshire! “

The first UK event in 30 years of fundraising for Italian jobs began on Thursday 14 October with a sporting afternoon at Elvington airfield before teams tackle miles of difficult roads through rocky peaks on a route leading them to Halifax and Whitby with a special stop at Harewood Racetrack.

In 2019, the car challenge raised £ 192,000, the equivalent of more than 150 grants, ranging from essentials like children’s beds and clothes to therapy and technical equipment, enabling Buttle UK to support up to 400 additional children.
