AS Roma vs Genoa – Football Match Report – 5th February 2022

Jose Mourinho’s 100th game as Serie A manager ended in controversy as his side AS Roma saw a last-minute winner ruled out in a 0-0 draw at home to Genoa’s 10 relegation players on Saturday.

Nicolo Zaniolo looked to have secured a late win with a shot from the bottom corner in the 90th minute, but referee Rosario Abisso ruled it out for a foul by Tammy Abraham in the build-up, after consulting the pitchside VAR monitor.

The furious Italy international was shown a second yellow for dissent moments later and angrily kicked the advertising boards to the side of the pitch as he headed for the tunnel.

Roma are sixth with 39 points and Genoa are 19th with 14 points, four from safety.

Mourinho was looking to equal a league record held by Antonio Conte by securing a 62nd victory in his first 100 games in the Italian top flight.

But he had to settle for a point against a Genoa side with an all-season win, despite Leo Ostigard being sent off midway through the second half.

The best chances fell on Roma when Sergio Oliveira hit the side netting, Chris Smalling headed in from a good position and Zaniolo exploded from inside the box.

The momentum swung further in the hosts’ favor when Ostigard, who replaced the injured Mattia Bani late in the first half, was sent off for flooring Felix Afena-Gyan.

Roma couldn’t get their power play to count until Zaniolo’s strike but the 22-year-old didn’t make the decision to knock down his goal well and was shown a second booking after trading words with Abisso.
