FLINT, MI – A new rooftop bar and restaurant located in downtown Flint has motivation for its current employees and new workers.

The hospitality industry has been hit hard by the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic. One of the major issues resonating in restaurants across the country is retaining employees and attracting new talent.

The management of the restaurant with Sauce Italian American Kitchen and Simmer Rooftop Lounge is looking to hire at least 10 people to fill positions of waiter, busser, bartender, host and kitchen.

Both businesses are located inside the Hilton Garden Inn, 110 W. Kearsley St., which opened in downtown Flint last fall. Sauce opened around the same time as the hotel, but the rooftop lounge is slated to open next month, according to Dorothy Brown, restaurant manager for Sauce Italian American Kitchen.

The sauce is known for its pastas and pizzas, including specialties based on authentic old world recipes, as well as made-to-order breakfast options, according to its website.

The Sauce Italian American Kitchen Facebook page recently posted a bonus advertisement for new workers and its employees.

Brown said if current employees recommend a job seeker who is hired by the restaurant, the employee will receive a bonus of $ 500. Additionally, if the new employee stays with the company for 90 days, they will receive a bonus of $ 1,000, she said.

“Due to COVID and with such a fluctuation with opening and reopening and closing, it has had a negative impact on the hospitality industry as a whole,” Brown explained. “It was quite difficult to keep the staff or get them in here.”

Brown acknowledged that unemployment has helped hospitality workers stay afloat as the industry has faced unpredictable challenges.

Simmer will offer small plates, shareable items, cocktails and wine. It will be a place to “grab something, have a drink, enjoy the atmosphere, being the only rooftop bar,” Brown said.

Those interested in applying for one of the positions can visit here.

The Hilton Garden Inn, an 11-story, $ 37.9 million downtown hotel, offers meeting facilities, a banquet center and rooftop lounge, and a terrace with views of the Flint skylines . There is also a cafe downstairs in the southeast corner of the building where Kearsley and Saginaw streets meet.

As the hotel was preparing to open, local officials and project supporters said the structure had reinvigorated Flint’s skyline.
